Keeping Your Spine Healthy As We Age
As September draws to a close, we continue to commemorate Healthy Aging Month! We are dedicated to promoting ways people can stay healthy as we age.
As we get older, our bodies start to change in ways that we might not think about until we experience them. Our skin, bones, and muscles all get weaker with time. It can be easy to notice when our skin starts to age, but it's not always so obvious when our bodies start to change on the inside - like when we have back and neck pain, stiffness, or numbness. These are all signs of an Aging Spine. It can be difficult to tell the difference between normal aging or a more serious issue.
Normal or Not?
Health Care Professionals say, back and neck pain are very common as we age, with 85% of people experiencing some form of discomfort especially among people aged 40-60, but the discomfort can start as early as 30 due to the natural effects of aging.
Could the sharp stabbing sensation merely the "creakiness" that comes with aging, or is it an indication of a more serious issue?
Age is a major contributor to spinal stenosis, but this condition can also be caused by arthritis, bone diseases, herniated discs, and tumors - Talk to your physician. Treating back and neck pain is important in order to avoid potential long-term consequences on a person's daily life and activities.
How can you keep your spine young?
Even though some back pain is to be expected with age, there is one way to lower your risk of severe pain — YOUR Weight. For every pound of your body weight, your musculoskeletal system is subject to four pounds of pressure when walking and eight pounds when running.
Staying at a healthy weight is very important for keeping stress off of the back and having better overall health. Eating healthy is very important, as well as doing regular aerobic or stretching exercises. Going for a walk, jog, or bike ride can help you to lose weight and strengthen your back. To help your mobility and prevent injuries, it is also a good idea to start each day with 5-10 minutes of stretching after waking up. Doing this will also help you to concentrate throughout the day.
If any activity leads to discomfort, it is best to seek medical help, as pain is the body's indication that something is not right. Never do something that triggers pain. Listen to your body.
